Acai Berry Side Effects

There have been a lot of articles in the media lately about the new ‘miracle’ supplement Acai Berries and frankly, I’m skeptical. When it comes to supplements I tend to shy away from them because the unproven benefits don’t seem to be worth risking the unknown side effects. Many weight loss pills can have serious side effects, however Acai Berries are from fruit found in the Amazon Rain Forest so it would seem that it may be worth considering the use of this supplement for weight loss.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this fruit yet, Acai Berries (pronounced a-sigh-y) are small, black berries which looks like a smaller variety of a grape. The fruit has a large seed at its core, surrounded by pulp on the outside. This pulp is used in a wide range of health foods and used to make capsules and added as a supplement to smoothies. The pulp contains a large amount of antioxidants and fiber which is a great benefit to anyone who is trying to lose weight. The berry has also been linked to a decreased appetite which is especially helpful when on a diet.

The first thing I do when I hear so many benefits is look for the catch, so I spent numerous hours researching Acai Berries. Since there were no definitive articles on the side-effects of Acai Berries I decided to write this article to compile my findings. All healthy choices should be done in moderation or you may risk throwing your health out of balance. One of the most common side effects people experience is over consumption of the supplement. Recommended doses range from 500 to 1000 milligrams per day, however some people consume significantly more than that. Between Organic Acai Berry Pills, Acai Berry Smoothies, Acai Berry Juice, and even Acai Berry Ice Cream there are many ways to ingest this fruit, and if you do all of them at once you’re just begging to experience side effects.

Fortunately the most common side effects from over ingesting this berry are mild and can include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and dizziness. With any supplement its best to start out in smaller doses and gradually increase the dosage as your body gets accustomed to the supplement.  An overdose of Acai Berries isn’t what I’m focusing on in this article. I am concerned with more serious side effects, and while everything I found indicates that Acai Berries are safe for most people, there are some concerns you should be aware of before you take this pill.

Acai Berries and IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome)

Acai Berries are known for their ability to cleanse your entire body, but especially your digestive system. For most people this translates into an increased number of bowel movements (to a healthier level), but for people struggling with IBS or other digestive tract problems this can be a serious concern. Acai Berries contain the highest concentration of antioxidants found in any natural food. They have more antioxidant than blueberries and pomegranate, and for people with controlled IBS this can be a good thing. However for people with uncontrolled IBS, or who are struggling to keep their IBS under control this can be a detriment. The increased bowel movements may make it more difficult to develop a healthy, regular digestive system. When suffering from IBS it is always best to consult with your doctor before adding any new supplement to your diet.

Allergic Reactions

People who suffer from severe allergic reactions to pollen or who have a hypersensitivity to acai, blueberries, grapes, or similar fruit are at risk of having an allergic reaction to Acai Pills, which contains the pulp of the Acai Berry. These allergic reactions are typically mild and can include:

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Rash
  • Congestion

In some cases moderate reactions can occur and the allergic reaction can spread to other parts of the body causing Itchiness and Difficulty breathing. In extremely rare cases severe allergic reaction can occur causing Anaphylaxis which is a life-threatening reaction in which the body’s response to the allergen affects the entire body. This may begin with itchy eyes or face and within minutes progress to more serious symptoms, including:

  • Swelling of the throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow
  • Mental confusion or dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Allergic reactions to Acai Berries are rare, and can be identified before becoming serious by starting with small doses of the Acai Berry Supplement and slowly progressing to the recommend dosage. If you have concerns about allergic reactions you should consult a doctor prior to taking Acai Berries.

Guarana and Other Additives

Many manufacturers of Acai Berry Pills include additives in their pills. Since one of the primary reasons people take this supplement is to increase their energy levels additives such as Guarana (which contains caffeine) give a more instantaneous boost in energy levels.  You should carefully read the ingredients of any Acai Berry supplement you purchase to ensure you are not allergic to any other ingredients. People with a sensitivity to caffeine should ensure they purchase a supplement which contains 100% Acai Berry Pulp.

When comparing different Acai Berry brands you will find that the prices differ significantly. Many companies offer free trial offers which enroll you in monthly subscriptions at high costs. When making any purchase online it is important to read the website carefully and only provide your credit card to companies with a secure website and positive customer feedback.

I never knew Acai Berries could have side effects, thanks for the information. My sister has IBS so I’ll make sure to show this article to her.

    • Tom says:

Kelly, I found it difficult to find info on Acai Berries too, that’s what motivated me to write this article even though I’ve never tried them. There are just so many articles out there written by someone who wants to Sell Acai Berries that its difficult to find legitimate ones. I’m glad my article was able to help you out, just let me know if you have any other questions on Acai Berries as I did a lot of research before I wrote this article.

  2. RJ says:

Hi, I appreciate this and I wanted to have this acai berry experience. What do you recommend? I wanted to shed abdominal weight. I figured this would be easy and to get over the counter.

    • Tom says:

      RJ,

From everything I’ve read the pills are the best for weight loss. You can then add the Acai Berry Juice or Sorbet instead of other juices you might drink. I’m doing my best to keep this post as far away from free trials as possible because frankly, I don’t trust them. I’d recommend that you go into your local GNC Health Store to purchase them. GNC has locations throughout the United States and Canada. They typically sell Acai Berries over the counter in capsules, juice and tea.

Make sure you read the label for other ingredients so you’re sure there aren’t any other ingredients you’re allergic to. Also you may want to talk to one of the sales people there for a recommendation for your specific goals.

Let me know how you make out, I’d be interested to hear how you like it!

      • RJ says:

I tried the 100% Pure Pulp of Acai Fruit by Universal Taste which I ordered online. It worked well for me, and in the past month I’ve lost 10 lbs! I’ve also felt more energy lately so I’ve been going to the gym more often. Luckily I didn’t experience any of the side effects oyu mentioned.

Im also skeptic about taking supplement products and so after hearing Acai berries from friends, I immediately search the net for its catch. And so I find your site.

I wanted to try taking Acai products together with my wife. I have a high cholesterol and blood pressure and to control such I’m taking metropolol 50mgs for my BP problem and lipitor for my cholesterol problem. Although it normalizes after taking these pills, I still wanted to loose weight. Will there be a problem taking Acai products together with my maintenance pills ??

    • Tom says:

From my research you should be able to take Acai Berries with Metropolol and Lipitor since the acai berries aren’t a drug, they’re more like an extra concentrated cranberry. That said, I am not a pharmacist and am not the best person to ask.

I would highly recommend that if you have any concerns about using Acai Berries with your current medication that you contact your doctor or pharmacist before you take the supplement. You don’t even need to go into the doctor’s office, just give a call and one of the nurses will relay your message and give you a call back with your doctor’s recommendation.

  4. Antoinette Tanenbaum-Gordon says:

I am here to tell you there ARE side effects to the Acai Berry! I am an RN and like everyone I wanted to loose weight and bought into this. What I got is the inability to walk staight at all or even stand up straight. This is VERY scary! I have tried Benadryl to counter act it. NO luck! I should tell you I have had several serious illnesses in my life Spinal Meningitis, Malaria (in Jamaica)and I do have IBS as well as high cholesterol (because I can not take the medication for that) and edema in my legs if I do not take diuretics as well as seizures. So yes I have a chemical reaction going on! LOL Well you have to have a sense of humour in this life! I am 54 and yes still alive and kicking.
But I am SURE aware I took WAY too much of the Acai berry! The only other medication that did this to me was Neurontin, after only the 3rd pill. I am SO GLAD YOU (the ONLY person I have found!) wrote of the TRUE side effects to the Acai Berry. I got mine from the Whole Foods store. Paid $22 and started in right away. It’s the real thing all right freeze dried no additives. Fruitrients is the brand and 2 capsules is 1500mg.
I hope this goes away soon. My husband is staying close by! I FEEL AWFUL RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

    • Tom says:

I’m very sorry to hear of the problems you’ve had with Acai Berry supplements. When I was researching it I also found it very difficult to find articles that legitimately talk about the side effects. While side effects are rare I think it is important for everyone to be aware of what they might be getting themselves into.

I appreciate your story, as the more people that talk about their experience the more people will be prepared for what they may experience. Hopefully once it works through your system you’ll be feeling well enough again. Please let me know how you make out and if there was anything you found to counteract your reaction to it.

  5. Goldie says:

Have you heard of anyone suffering from heart burn after taking acai berry. I’ve been using it for 2 weeks now and I’ve developed the worse heart burn. It only happens after about 20 minutes of taking the pill. If I don’t take it I don’t have the heart burn. So this leads me to believe it is the acai berry and not something else.

    • Tom says:

      Goldie,

I’ve heard mixed stories about the effects of Acai Berries on people who suffer from Acid Reflux. Many people say that Acai Berries have a healing effect on the esophagus which is damaged after chronic heartburn. Personally, I don’t believe that as I just don’t think there are enough studies to prove it.

Prior to losing 100 pounds I used to suffer from severe Acid Reflux. At one point I was on two different medications just to keep it under control, and I still couldn’t eat a lot of things. From my experience with heart burn anything can cause it, it just depends what you’re body is sensitive to. For example fruits high in acid content (ie: Orange Juice, and Grapefruit) would have me nearly to the point of tears it burned so bad – even with my medicine.

It sounds to me like you’ve identified that it is your Acai Berry Capsules that are causing the heart burn. What I’m curious about is whether it is the Acai Berries themselves or another additive in the pill. You may want to read through the ingredients, and then try purchasing a different brand of Acai Berries without the same additives and see if that helps you any.

You should be able to find different versions of Acai Berries at GNC or another supplement store. You could also buy it online from Amazon, or other retailers. They sell a Freeze Dried Acai Powder
which only contains Acai Berries. Amazon even shows you an image of the nutrition label to show you.

Please let me know how you make out, I’m interested to hear what was causing the heart burn, and if you could still continue to take Acai Berries.

      • Goldie says:

Thank you for the detailed information Tom. I’ve been watching what I eat and slowly reintroduced acai powder to my diet. I found that the juice really triggered my heart burn so I’ve stopped taking that and just focused on the powder which I mix in with food.

  6. Barbara says:

Wow, I started taking Acai berry capsules which I got at Whole Foods. I think I over did it as yesterday I had a bottle of Acai juice also. I had the worst cramps all night. I find I want to eat more not less when taking the capsules. Is it possible to take too much Acai? I appreciate your feedback.

  7. Suzy says:

Has this product caused anyone severe gas? And if so, does it go away with time? Also, how long before you see any weight loss?

  8. wanda wooten says:

Yes there are side effects,i have been taking it for a month,i have a bad blistering rash from it.It is not worth it.It needs to be studied ,and also it has not been approved by fda.ALSO NO wieght loss.I got mine from dr.oz.

    • tara says:

did your blisters hurt? i started taking acai a couple days ago and i have red spots all over my stomach and back and they hurt.

  9. mamabird says:

Been taking the acai berry edge for three days now, the recommended dosage of two tabs twice daily for the first seven days. I’ve already experienced some cramping and nausea. Yet, right now, I am taking deep breaths at the computer to fend off a really scary feeling that I am about to black out completely. I feel like I am drunk, really drunk, although I’ve eaten my normal healthy diet today, and drank plenty of fluids (non alcoholic of course). I nearly rushed to the ER about 30 minutes ago, but have decided with my husband’s prodding to drink lots of water to flush my system, and wait this out a little. I will not be taking this any longer. I warn everyone about acai berry edge product as well…as the company is very crooked, took funds from my account unauthorized, and I had to endure hours on hold before I could talk to a person. I thought maybe if this product worked, I could forgive and forget all of that. Yet, now-I feel like I’ve been poisoned. Shallow pulse, faint, tingly, and unable to resume my daily activities. Beware-use with great caution…if at all.

    • Tom says:

Thank you for the information mamabird, I’ll have to keep an eye out for similar side effects for Acai Berry Edge. I wonder if there is another additive in these pills that you’re allergic to.

  10. Will says:

I’ve only taken one capsule of the acai berry just a couple of minutes ago so I don’t know if they are any side affects as of yet.

It seems to me though the people who buy it from these sites are the one’s having the side affects and not the ones who buy them from the shops.

The free trial sites are scams, because they put in all sorts of ingrediants in which counteract the potential of the acai berry – as said by numerous sites. Also they are stored unsafely and they need to have many things done to them before they are suitable for human consumption. Ontop of this like someone else has said they expect you to send the bottles back within 14 days otherwise they put you on this monthly price plan which makes you pay stupid amounts of money for them.

I would recommend getting the acai capsules from holland & barrett (a UK shop) which is the most legimate herbal company going. They have a whole section on their site for acai berry’s. You can either get it in drink form or capsules which is what I am using.

Just one question, do you swallow the capsules whole with water or do you eat them as they feel very squishy?

    • Tom says:

I completely agree, if you’re going to buy Acai Berry products you should really stay away from the offers that are too good to be true. The reason so many people advertise these discount offers is that the companies are paying very high commissions on each sale. I couldn’t in good faith send my readers to one of those sites though, that’s why I have a few links to Amazon.com. You can easily tell the good products from the bad on Amazon by simply reading the reviews.

As for eating or swallowing the capsules, I have not tried the ones you mention but must of the products soled here in the states include instructions. From what I’ve read you would typically swallow the capsule, but I recommend consulting the manufacturer.

  11. Denise says:

I first took a capsule of Acai berry concentrate and some juice last Thursday. By 3am Friday morning I was so sick that I couldn’t leave the toilet. Dizzy, incredibly sleepy, nauseous, and so much diarrhea that I began to wonder if I should go to hospital. I finally started to feel better on Sunday evening. As my boss had been sick earlier in the week, I assumed I had caught a bug, not that it was anything to do with the Acai Berry as it is almost impossible to find anything AGAINST Acai on the web. Anyway, I took another capsule yesterday and I’m still spinning out, disoriented, my eyes can’t focus properly, and I’m still running to the toilet all the time. My throat hurts, and I’m so tired, that last night I slept through for 10 hrs – (well, I had to get up now and again to get to the toilet!). This is seriously scary stuff, and a huge waste of my money…although, I have of course lost weight!!! I will never touch this stuff again.

    • Tom says:

Thanks for the info Denise! Do you happen to remember which Acai Berry Concentrate you used? I’m sure whatever it was our readers would like to stay away from it.

  12. Katt says:

At 6am today I had to run to the toiletand it is almost 6 hours later and I have been to the bathroom at least 8 times with diahhrea. I have been taking 1000mg of acai berry for about 3 weeks. This is the first side effect I have had and notied that others have had the same problem, because I was beginning to think I might be coming down with the flu or a virus.

I buy all my vitamins through Swanson and have been satisfied with the quality for many years. I don’t know why I would have a side effect after 3 weeks. I haven’t really lost any weight, only 4 lbs, but I am noticing my stomach is going down and clothes are fitting much better. I have also been on the FLat belly diet for the last 3 weeks too so I can’t say whether it’s the acai berry or the diet. It might just be too much fruit along with the acai. I won’t take a pill today and I think I will cut back to 500 mg for now. I also take reservertrol. I do have to say I have had much more energy since taking the acai so I hope this is a solitary incident.

I’m glad I found this site and was able to see that others have had similar problems and it’s not just my overactive imagination. I have taken some immodium and it seems to be working!

If anyone has had anything similar happen to them please let me know if you have found a solution. I will let you know what happens when I cut back on my acai. Thanks for listening.

    • Tom says:

Hi Katt, I haven’t heard back from you. I was just curious how you made out with the Acai Berries. Did you end up finding a dose that worked for you?

Also, how did you like the Flat Belly Diet? Maybe I’ll have to look into researching that some more and witting an article about it.

      • Mimi Otohwo says:

Like most of you, I was looking for a quick fix to loosing weight. I just had my second child 8 months ago. Searching on the internet, I came across the adverts for Acia Berry and needless to say, I started taking the Acia berry about 3 days ago, I have been experiencing dizzyness and a heavy head. I have decided to stop taking this pill and revert to the old fashion way of weight loss. It is unfortunate that these websites that are actively promoting Acia berry pill are not also promoting the side effects. I think that the berry on it’s own could work, it’s just that most of the manufacturers out there have mixed the Acia berry with other ingredients and have made them less potent. Thanks for this site, at least i know that I am not losing my mind.

  13. Roy in Florida says:

I also have had side effects from this product. all are related to my bowels. I feel like I have to have a bowel movement all day long. My bowels have become very pasty, and I’m full of gas. There is some slight nausea occationaly. It has reduced my need for food because of the effects, but this is not a good way to diet. I am a very healthy person, and taking this product for the antioxidents. I have now stopped taking it, as the discomfort is too much

  14. Tracy says:

I enjoyed reading the what was said. I don’t take the pill. What I do is drink juice twice a day. Which contains 19 fruits which includes the acai berry. I also have found that drinking my juice my moods are better, lost some pounds, and have energy through out the day.

  15. Gemma says:

    Interesting reading all this.

I started taking Acai Berry 100% on the thursday last week, didnt really notice any difference as in side effects. However from Sunday my bowel movements have increased tenfold, keep getting sharp pains in my stomach not so much that it really bothers me, but to the point I know I will need the toilet very soon.

I have resigned myself to the fact that any supposed diet pill is going to make you go to the toilet more often, how else is it supposed to work so fast, i have lost 3lbs in 4 days. I have not even increased the number of pills, I just take one a day, i think that will have to be my limit.

  16. dncsmom says:

I really enjoyed reading this article and all the feedback. I appreciate the effort you took to provide this information. It was helpful in making an informed choice whether or not to try this supplement.

Althought I’ve looked at almost everything, I’m definitely a supplement novice. I am very anxiuos though to lose my post baby belly so I think I’ll make this my first try.

I’ve heard that you can combine Acai with a colon cleanse for added benefit. I have been considering some sort of colon cleanse for a while now but from what I’ve read re: the bowel issues people have faced with Acai, I’m not so sure. Do you have any input on this? Would you recommend anything?

Thanks again for your info and time… its much appreciated.

  17. patty says:

I started taking acaiblast berry chews from gnc and it gave me very strong stomach contractions and made me go to the bathroom alot. I read on another site that this is caused from it being so high in fiber and you should start out very slowly. So after all this stops I will cut the chew into four pieces and try again. But I feel people should be very careful with it because it is very concentrated.

  18. penny says:

I’ve just bought a bottle of acai juice from amazon thunder- only been taking it for 3 days- no difference yet and no side effects. All i know is that i’ve read that amazon thunder is the best out there- they have an online chat service where you can ask any questions to their team. The juice tastes okay. Ive bought it to boost my immune system.
Thanks for putting this site on here- big help to a lot of people i reckon.
Will let you know if i have any side effects and also if i notice any benefits!

  19. paulette says:

Hi Tom: Anybody hear about stroke or heart attack side affects? I heard rumor this AM and an concerned.

    • Carrie says:

I have had a pounding heart beat as well as heartburn like I have never had before, my stomach burns and hurts and many other issues. After reading this I finally put 2 and 2 together that it has to be from the Acai and I am not falling apart. Been taking it for about 3 weeks and am done taking it as of today.

    • Tom says:

Paulette, I wasn’t able to find any confirmed rummors where Acai has lead to heart problems. However, as Carrie pointed out heatburn can result. The best bet is to start out with a very small dosage and see if it has any side effects. Let us know how you make out!

  20. A. says:

Thanks for the research. I have been trying to locate information on side effects of acai berry and cleanse supplements. After six days of taking acai berry combined with colon cleanse, as recommended, I have been bent over with lower abdominal and back pain. I drank plenty of water as an attempt to flush my system. This is in addition to my normal eight glasses of water. The pain has somewhat subsided however I feel tightness in my rectum and pain when I urinate. I too thought of going to the emergency room but decided to flush and wait it out.

I have not had any problems prior to this with my bowels or with lower abdominal pain. At night, it feels like my skin is burning.

I think I will stick with a low fat diet and daily exercise to loose weight. While this may take longer, I will not have to send my body into shock during the process and will ultimately feel better. I figure I did not gain the weight in 90 days and I am not going to lose it in 90 days.

Thanks again for posting you findings.

  21. Kepola Malia says:

Hello Tom. I started taking a supplement called Spring Valley Natural Wild Harvested Acai antioxidant support. Is it ok to take, and do you have any information on side affect of this or is it a waste of money. I bought it because I cannot take vit C, it gives me really bad heartburn so I wanted to try this.any response would be helpful. Thanks

  22. Judy says:

So do you think this increaces the heart rate? Like diet pills do.

    • Tom says:

Judy, I don’t think it should cause increased heart rate. Of course I’m not a doctor but from everyone I’ve talked to about Acai Berries there isn’t any serrious side effects unleses you really abuse the product.

  23. Dennis says:

I really like your blog! You write some really wonderful articles on Acai Berry. Thanks they are a great help!

  24. Rita says:

I’ve been taking the capsules for the last two months, i have noticed no change whatsoever in my weight. I am quite dissapointed actually. Am i doing something wrong? is there a specific name brand i should be taking?

  25. Deb says:

After a month of looking on the internet. I have to say I am thankful that I have finally found somebody noting some side effects. All I find is sites saying side effects, loss of appetite which is good! And, then try to sell a free sample. Really trustworthy, huh! Then you have to watch that you’re trial time ends and turns into being billed once a month. Watch the fine print!
I would say the best thing to do is talk to your GNC sales person. If they’re honest, they will tell you the truth. Mine told me they haven’t had a lot of success with a lot of weight loss, but, most experience more energy. Which in turn gets you moving, losing weight and feeling better about yourself. I’ve read a lot of the above messages on running to the bathroom. What do you think cleanse means?? It means cleaning out the system and how else are you going to clean out your system but to go to the washroom. It doesn’t just vanish into thin air! There’s also a little thing called moderation! I know everyone is gung ho to start something that will help you lose weight and feel better, but, you also are adding something foreign to your body and you have to be careful on how your body may react. Especially to all the extra ingrediants. For example. If you eat too many prunes. Guess what, you’re going to spend some time in the washroom. It’s the same thing. If you overdue eating Cherries, guess what, you’re going to have stomach cramps….

I started Acai power blast on Thursday. It’s Monday. I’m someone who would go to the washroom once a day or two days. Already I am going to the washroom 3 times a day which in turn makes me feel less bloated. Bonus! I’m sure it depends on what kind of results you are expecting. If it’s a small amount like I’m looking for, try it. But, don’t expect miracles. It’s called excercise and good diet. The bitter truth is there are no MIRACLE Pills to make you skinny. I am not writing this to offend anyone, just to ask to read all the fine details of how the berry works.

Hi, I live in the United Kingdom and I ordered an Acai Berry detox and another dietary supplement called Life Cleanse from http://www.acai-cleanse-detox.com/?kwtoken=Acai-Berries_UK_G_1.
Im 15 and my mum is a nurse and she says they’re not good at all and have life long side effects, im just asking from your point of view should i take them?

    • Tom says:

Bennie, I would suggest you listen to your mum as she is looking out for what is best for you. If you’re concerned about your weight or health I would suggest that you start a conversation with your mother and see if you can choose a method that you will both be comfortable with.

  27. Rob says:

I will echo others in thanking you for doing research on the side effects. I think they made me dizzy and queazy in the stomach.

I started Acai pills yesterday (2 at 500 mg each, 4:1 extract), along with a bunch of other supplements that I had ordered. The source, PhysiciansFormulas.com (Ray Sahelian) did warn against trying more than one new supplement at once…but I did not heed. I did not know what to blame it on yesterday, but today, I took an Acai pill before breakfast and the dizziness started up before I even got to any of the others.

A major factor may be the other medications that I am on. Lexapro (antidepressant) and 300 mg Neurontin and 3 mg Lunesta for sleep. I am normally OK, but am often on the edge of dizziness. Things like a glass of wine can often push me over. I hope that the Acai berry is the culprit!

I started taking acai berry tablets 3 weeks ago and havent lost any weight. Im prone to depression but have been great for the past couple of years. Im worried as I have felt more depressed over the last two weeks and the only difference to my life is that im taking these pills . Has anyone else experienced any low mood as a result of taking these pills???

    • Monica says:

I started taking the capsules and almost inmediately got a headache, heartburn and total insomnia at night. I gave it another try just in case and the same sympthoms came back. Ah, it also made me constantly hungry and bad temper!
The capsules I took contain caffeine

  29. Justyn says:

i am 14 and weight 145lbs i want to loose 20lbs and get in shape for hockey will this make me sick or can i take it

    • Tom says:

Justyn, I haven’t studied the effects of Acai Berries on teenagers yet so I wouldn’t feel comfortable making a suggestion one way or another. From the comments others have left there is a good chance that if you take it in the recommended dose you won’t get sick. However a number of people have reported problems, and it really depends on how your body reacts to it. I would give someone at your doctor’s office a call and ask them if they think there is any harm in trying Acai Berries. If they give you the OK I’d suggest that you start in small doses.

Has anyone noticed blood in their stool while taking the pill? Could this also be a side effect?

  32. Susan says:

I am suffering from a terrible metal taste in my mouth after taking two large tablespoons of Acai extra 4 days ago. Has anyone had this symptom and know how to get rid of it? It is really affecting my when I eat or drink. Thanks

    • Tom says:

Susan, I’ve never heard of anyone experiencing a metal taste in their moth before but that doesn’t mean its not the Acai Powder. It may be one of the other ingredients in the powder. Any chance you can post a list of ingredients and I’ll do some research and see what I can find.

      • Katielyn says:

This is due to the body getting rid of the toxins, sometimes the tongue turns a bit white and there is a metallic taste. Just means she’s cleansing a bit better than everyone else!

I started taking acai capsules about 2 weeks ago. Within a couple of days of taking the pills,I started noticing itching around my waist and on my torso and on my neck. Over one week, the rash became progressively worse. Had to go to doctor on Tuesday and got prednisone shot. Still have the rash, but it is fading.Itches like carzy though. Not sure what the cause is, but I’m stopping the acai to see what happens.

My friend just recently gave me a bottle of acai juice. I thought it was another version of Noni Juice which I used to drink so I tried it. Whatever it is it’s just wrong for my stomach. I’ve only been taking it for 2 days and my stomach has been seriously cramping up. It really hurts. I’ve been taking 2 small cups morning and night. It’s occurred to me that maybe it’s just detoxifying my system and the effects will subside in time, but it’s not worth it for me. Healthy shouldn’t hurt like this.

I have just ordered acai berry online after reading about it from cnn, however now I am a little concerned. I have a misfire in my heart and caffine and other stimulants will make my heart go dangerously fast, so I though acai berry might just be the fix to a diet supplement for me. Now I read about all these other side effects and I am a little worried. Does anyone know if there is any effect on the heart?

  37. Melissa says:

Hi, i’m so glad I found this post! I ordered Acai off the internet at one of those free sample ones. Word of advice, dont do it! they kept billing my credit card in the amount of about 100 per month, and it takes forever to cancel, and they only give you half of it back. less than.
Anyway, I never got the courage to try the actual product, got bottles of it sitting in the house. I dont think I will tho, exercise, and watching what I eat seems like a better idea… Esp since i got this crap off the internet… sigh… i think i spent about 300 on this box of garbage…

An allergic reaction to acai capsules

I was looking for the symptoms to to see if I found any that matched mine before sharing this information. I was given a bottle of acai berry capsules by a co-worker at work, after giving her a liquid supplement that contained the acai berry also. She found capsules at a value store, as I recall 10.00 for two bottles.
This symptom is one I never experienced while drinking the juice with the acai product….but after taking the pills, I awoke one night at about 4:00 in the am, totally unable to breathe, and attempted to replenish my air flow buy gulping breath through my mouth, until I became fully awake and realize that the only solution was to breathe through my nose, even though that did not seem like enough air at the time.
I will no longer use those pills……I have never experienced something so dreadful in my life, so my reaction was an allergic reaction to the bronchial passage, extremely dry throat, and constriction to breathe. How do I know it is the berry…because I saw it in the symptoms post on this site.
Some people are speaking of bowel movement….just wait until you get a reaction like this….Oh Boy it’s a doozy…..
I am afraid right now to go to sleep, in case it happens again. Feels like not being able to dislodge something stuck in your throat.

I started taking this three days ago, and no side effects. All of a sudden today, I’m wondering if I need to go to the hospital! I am sooo dizzy and disoriented. When I walk I feel very drunk. This is horrible. I sure hope it’s the acai, because then I know it will end because I won’t take it anymore! Dangit, I was just starting to see my stomach go down a little :( Wow. What do you think is in this stuff that makes me so dizzy?

  41. Maddi says:

I drank one ounce of juice a day for six days and broke out in a severe rash that caused swelling in my limbs and oozing from my skin. I had to see the gp and the dermatologist as well as pay for two different perscriptions. The itching is off the scale even with the meds. It has been five days of serious rash. Nothing is worth this.

  42. Teebs says:

I have been taking the acai berry/life cleanse combo for a week, and have not seen any flatter stomach or side effects. However, the first day I took mine I went out to the bar and got pretty full, but not enough to get sick. The next day, although I had eaten tons the day before, I got sick 3 times and had nothing in my stomach to be sick with! I have not had any drinks since but I am guessing from my experience and from reading this article that the two do not mix!

  43. Steve says:

Wow very informative read. I have thinking about trying acai products more so for the antioxidants then weight loss but i didn’t realize they could maybe caused problems for people with IBS. I’ve had some bouts with IBS so I’ll need to do some more research before using acai prodcuts. Thanks for the information.

HAve been using holland and barret acai powder for last 4 days 3grms o the powder per day in 8 oz of fluid. have stopped drinkin since new year and also have quit smokin so far for a week usin NRT. So far it all seems ok for me however am combining the acai with soy based protien shakes have the acai one first thing in the morning. been hittin the gym again quite hard as need to do a lot more excersive and have been on a diet that although not great is one i have used befor protien shakes through the day and a vegetable meal in the evening very little meat and a lot o roughage. spend a couple o hours a day in the gym and with eating so much less i have obviously lost a lot o wieght.

some would sasy almost unhealthy amounts but i am well and happy really using the acai for more of its detox and antioxident properties havin quit the alcohgol n fags so far have found am a bit more gassy (but then that could be the huge amounts of veg) no other side effects yet will keep this updated should anything have read above seem to happen.

read somewher other H and B capsules were made from extract ratios and they obviously pump more intio the capsules than the acai. the powder is pure ground freeze dried berry so maybe that would be the way for some who have had serious effects to go and also following the labels to make sure i take exactly what i should.

will update ina week or so. should anything go arry will be sooner..

I’ve been taking Acai Berry Detox and Colon Cleanse for only three days. So far I have found that it has reduced my appetite and I have lost a little weight…but has also caused headaches, dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramps. I have also found that alcohol seems to affect me more – I went out for one drink last night and came back feeling a little merry, which wouldnt normally happen after one! I have a 30 day trial – so I’ll comment again at the end of the trial and let you know what happens!

  47. Alisa says:

This is just ridiculous. People try and exaggerate in every way possible. It’s a berry for God sake. Anything, anything at all, if taken the wrong way can be dangerous! Use common sense. Whoever wrote this article is obviously looking to scare everyone and on top of that, must be really bored.

Hey everyone. glad i found this blog..i just purchased acai berry juice today at my supermarket. I have been trying to lose excess baby weight. I have consumed about 4 oz and i feel like i have had a vodka tonic!!!! I am a little dizzy and I feel like i have the munchies! Mind you, the four ounces were mixed with about 32 oz of water, i can only imagine what i would be feeling like if i drank it straight.

Hey everyone. I have been taking the acai berry pills for about a month now and started getting a bad rash all over my stomach and back. It is very itchy and not pretty looking at all. Some of the spots are bigger and very red and dry, I would deffinetly not recommend it until more research has been done on it. One more thing I did not see any change in weight while taking them. I thought I might give you guys a heads up. Just to add I have never been alergic to anything and have great health, so this may happen to anyone.
