Amateur Disc Golf
I was introduced to the sport Disc Golf over a year ago. This is a sport where you throw a specially designed disc (Frisbee) anywhere from 200 to 500 feet at a basket. There are usually 18 holes like normal golf, and there is a certain par set for each course. The goal is to throw the Frisbee to the basket in a number of attempts less than the par on the hole. From my experience with Disc Golf in Atlanta and the surrounding areas, the typically par on each hole is 3.
Disc Golf is usually played in a park, and it is common to have obstacles in the way. This might consist of a big tree right in the center of your shot, or a stream running parallel with the hole. Down south Disc Golf is made more difficult by the wealth of Kudzu in most parks. This makes it easy to lose your disc as you play. For this reason some of the most popular Disc Golf Frisbees are bright in color.
I’ve been using the Amateur Disc Golf set which is made out of a heavier plastic than the more expensive variants. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the Champion Disc Golf line, however so far my discs have worked fairly well for my skill level. I’ve recently found a number of videos on YouTube that offer training advice on playing disc golf. After watching a few of them I feel like I have much more knowledge of the sport. There are a number of Disc Golf Courses in Atlanta and the surrounding communities so I have no problem finding somewhere to practice.
This sport is an excellent choice for me on those hot days when I just don’t want to get out and exercise. Sometimes its just too hot to hike, job, or Rollerblade in Atlanta so Disc Golf allows me to walk a few miles in total around the park the Disc Golf course is located in. It also give me a pretty good upper body work out as you have to throw the Frisbee pretty hard to get it to fly 300 feet. I know it sounds silly, but most people usually have sore arm and chest muscles after their first few games because it works muscles they’re not used to using.
I highly recomend this sport to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It gets out out to some places you may not have visited otherwise and it gives you a good workout too!
